Panchatantra

Updated: Mar 19, 2021

Panchatantra is a compilation of series of short stories, many of which use animal metaphors with human virtues. Each story ends with a moral that can be used in our daily lives.

A little history-

Panchatantra (Pañca-tantra) is one of India's most influential contributions to world literature. The German Sanskrit scholar Johannes Hertel believed that the original collection was compiled in Kashmir(a state in India) about 200 BC, and that at this time many of the stories were already ancient.

What is the meaning of Panchatantra?

Panchatantra, 'Pañca' means 5 and 'tantra' means principles. The five principles being

  1. 'Mitra Bhedha'(Loss of friends)

  2. 'Mitra Laabha'(Gaining friends)

  3. 'Suhrudbheda'(Causing discord between friends)

  4. 'Vigraha'(Seperation) and

  5. 'Sandhi'(Union)

This book teaches morals pertaining to all the five above listed principles in a fun and interesting way. It's one of my all time favorite Indian classics. I read it with my young one now and would love to share it with all the young ones around the globe.
